- Jul 31, 2018 -

Folding chairs have been regarded as one of the most important furniture for many centuries and a symbol of social status.

In ancient civilization, folding chairs were not only for seating, but also for various formal occasions and ceremonies. In Ancient Egyptian furniture, folding chairs were ranked among the most important furniture. Folding chairs began in about 2000-1500 BC, the first folding chairs are military commanders on the battlefield dedicated seats, but also a symbol of power and prestige.

Although time goes on, folding chairs have always been a symbol of power.

Egyptian folding chairs, along with the subsequent folding chairs of Greek and Etruscan (ancient Italian Midwest), became the archetype of the later Roman folding chairs, and in the Roman Republic the Sellacurulis chairs began to be widely used in civilian courts.

From the "Sellacurulis" chair of Rome to the "Sellaplicatilis" of the Lombard clan, and then to the "Faldistorium" of the Carolingian dynasty, we can find a change of form. By the leg of the chair crossing the sides of the chair, turn to the front of the chair and cross. This is to emphasize the intersection of the "X" structure, showing the symbol of power.

The best example is the seat of Thefranconians King Dagobert. Before the Renaissance, the typology of folding chairs appeared. We found that the 16th century Sediadellaforbice Chair (scissors Chair) inherited the characteristics of faldistorium.

But there are two major differences:

The ' Chairofpetrarca ' and the ' Sediaatenaglia ' Inherit the ' Savonarola ' and the ' Dantesca ', and their chairs and legs cross back to the sides of the chair. In the Baroque period, the chair containing the legs of the cross chair did not fold, especially during the Louis 14 to Louis 16 period, the ' X ' structure was a symbol of xenophobia.

Napoleon's battlefield seat "Fauteuil" from the etymology of ancient French "Faldestoel", and the origin of the word in Latin "faldistorium". Because the folding chairs themselves become popular seats, so there has been a variety of forms and production processes. Also because the folding chair has not contained too many power and the prestige symbol, therefore this also causes the new function, the new design development. At the end of 19th century, folding chairs were the designers of utilitarianism, and various forms of seating were present. Folding chairs have a long history of military use. It needs to have a forthright and compact look, and to get acquainted with durable features. When it begins to show aesthetics, people have a memory of it. But it has never been beautifully designed.

Napoleon chair Fauteuil name from the ancient French "Faldestoel", the word roots in Latin "Faldistorium", the name of the past folding chairs with dignity and noble implication, and the Napoleon chair "Fauteuil" has been as the name of the chief seat.
